VELODROME | MONDORF-LES-BAINS

Sports Complex, Swimming Pool, and Velodrome | 2018

The project involves the creation of a large-scale sports complex on the “Bei Grëmelter” site in Mondorf-les-Bains, including a national velodrome, a regional aquatic center, and a sports hall, intended for the general public, professional athletes, and students of the future European School.

Designed as a strong architectural landmark, the building draws its identity from the shape of a bicycle wheel, symbolized by a unified circular volume under a single roof, integrated into the site’s natural topography. Three main entities — velodrome, swimming pool, and sports hall — are brought together around a central axis (a monumental staircase), ensuring clear spatial organization and functional synergy.

The approach emphasizes:

  • • sustainable architecture (wooden structure, rainwater harvesting, solar roof),

  •    universal accessibility,

  • • strong landscape integration with renaturation, retention basins, and a green belt,

  • • optimized flow management (pedestrians, bicycles, vehicles, logistics).

The interior is organized around an “indoor street” bathed in natural light, which connects all areas. The project also includes social spaces (brasserie, refreshment bar, multipurpose rooms) to complement the sports functions.
