A Design That Fits Its Surroundings

The project is built around the idea of living at height, offering a connection to nature and open views over the rooftops below. The five carefully placed buildings create a sense of rhythm along Rue du Nordhang, forming a transition between the larger-scale volumes of Quartier Gierwerei and the natural landscape.

Each residence makes the most of the terrain’s natural slopes, following a terraced layout to bring in more light and create outdoor spaces that feel private yet open to nature. The Masterplan’s landscape strategy, developed with Maya Dewetak, helps shape not only the architecture but also the shared outdoor spaces, ensuring a smooth connection between public and private areas.

Some key design choices include:

  • A pedestrian-friendly layout, making movement through the site easy
  • A strong focus on landscaping, keeping the area green and inviting
  • Step-free access, ensuring every residence is easily reachable
  • Pre-treated wooden facade cladding

A modular design approach helps keep construction efficient while allowing for sustainable principles like material reuse where possible. While some aspects of the original circular economy concept were adjusted during the process, the project still prioritizes smart resource use and long-term quality.

Lot 7.1, with its larger and more structured layout, contrasts with the smaller Lots 7.2 to 7.5, requiring a careful balance of space and function. The design follows the 2020 Fonds du Logement housing guidelines, ensuring a logical and comfortable flow in each unit while making the most of daylight and outdoor connections.

The result is a thoughtfully designed residential area, blending city living with nature in a way that feels both practical and welcoming.
